Don't Put Up With Mechanics Thinking You Don't Understand Your Car

Don't Put Up With Mechanics Thinking You Don't Understand Your Car

Why It Is A Great Idea For Women To Learn More About car Maintenance
Even though there are now plenty of female mechanics out there, and in just about every corner of the motoring and even motor sport worlds women occupy top level positions, there is still a lasting stereotype that girls don't know how to take care of a car. While for some of us it is actually to some degree true, and we don't all necessarily know a coolant hose from an exhaust manifold, this doesn't mean we deserve to be treated like idiots when we take a car in to be serviced, or when we shop for a used car.
Not knowing much about cars can be a bit of a problem in these
situations, and one that can cost a lot of money. For these reasons, it can be a really great idea to learn more about cars and car maintenance if you're a woman. Partly because it will save you money and help you get the most out of your cars, and partly because it is really satisfying to prove to a man that you know what you're talking about!
How To Learn More About Car Maintenance
There are loads of routine things you can learn to do on your own car without going to evening classes or getting someone to teach you, thanks to the internet. You can find in depth video tutorials, often specific to your model of car, for all kinds of things. Whether you want to learn to change a bulb on one of your car's lights, replace a tire, test your suspension, or even diagnose what is causing that weird sound, you can find loads of resources to help you on the web for free thanks to sites like YouTube and specialist car websites. Of course, nothing beats practical learning, so why not have a look at these videos on your tablet or phone while you are looking at the relevant parts of your car and use them to guide you through the steps as you do them?
    Building Confidence
As you begin to learn more about how your car works, everything suddenly seems a lot less mysterious and the dark art of "tinkering with cars" becomes a fun challenge rather than a scary prospect where you might mess something up. Many people who start off learning about cars out of necessity because they need to fix something find they get really into it - you may soon become a true petrol head!
One non functioning light may not seem like a big deal, but it actually has a huge impact on how safely you can drive. Driving with lights that don't work is also illegal, and if you get caught you'll be facing even more unwanted expense as a result of fines. If the police who pull you over want to, they can even impound your car in some circumstances for being unroadworthy because you haven't kept up on maintenance things like looking after your light bulbs. All of this means you need to get the dead bulb sorted right away, and the bad news is that because bulbs all come in pairs and are usually used in pairs too, if your left headlight has just gone, chances are the right will soon too. You therefore need to replace both headlight bulbs.
